Center for Composite Materials - University of Delaware

CCM Alum: Meike Kollmannthaler

In April 2016, I had the unique opportunity to participate in a six-month internship at the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials (UD-CCM) due to the support of Dr. -Ing. Dieter Veit from the Institut für Textiltechnik of RWTH Aachen University. UD-CCM is one of the leading institutes for research in the field of fiber-reinforced composites – my specialization as a graduate student in Germany. The opportunity to gain research-relevant work experience at a renowned institute in an attractive region of the United States and at the same time to gain an insight into everyday American student life, made my decision for participating in the internship at UD-CCM an easy one.

At UD-CCM, I was encouraged to work independently in the field of flow simulation and understanding processing of short fiber composite materials. This enabled me to develop my ability to work independently and autonomously and expand my professional competence on unknown topics. In addition, I supervised interns and gained important management experience. I am particularly grateful to my mentor, Dr. John Tierney for his encouragement and confidence in my capabilities.

Furthermore, my stay abroad and the very diverse student and staff structure at CCM and the University of Delaware, allowed me to broaden my horizons regarding other cultures and working methods.

Since May 2017, I have been a development engineer at Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG in the field of body advanced development and I am doing my doctorate on acoustically efficient lightweight vehicle structures. I am integrating the valuable experiences from my time at UD-CCM to bear in all areas of my daily work and hope that they will help me to complete my dissertation successfully in approximately 3 years.
