MDS - Moisture Diffusion Software

  • MDS is a moisture diffusion analysis software program for predicting water uptake, diffusion and internal distribution through the thickness of multilayer composite materials by finite difference method.
  • Effect of material variation boundary conditions and layer thicknesses can be studied in real time.
  • Model assumes that diffusion coefficient, density, equilibrium saturation are constant throughout analysis (can modify this as needed).
  • Model is appropriate as long as interface points are included in the set of finite difference grid points.

MDS INputs

  • Layer Information:
    • Thickness, (cm), Diffusion Coefficient (cm*cm/sec), Dry density, (g/cc), Equilibrium Solubility Of H 2 O, no of Finite difference nodes
  • Boundary and Initial Conditions:
    • Top and Bottom relative humidity (%) outside of the sample, known initial H 2 O concentration (given or zero), relative humidity at which Equilibrium solubilities were measured.
  • Analysis Information:
    • Final time, time step (sec, min, hour, week month year), no. of solution steps, output interval, Crank Nicolson or implicit solution scheme, plate size information to determine total moisture uptake.
