FY 2005-06

Research expenditures in FY 05-06 totaled more than $9.0 Million (exceeding $7.5 Million for the fourth consecutive year) continuing to support a unique source of composites research resources. These resources have allowed UD-CCM to continue to respond to new research opportunities and expand capabilities. The personnel component of these resources continues to represent a balanced mix of skill, knowledge, and experience (see Personnel by Category) needed to host three continuing Centers of Excellence (CMR, CMT, and ONR) and participate as a partner in a fourth FAA Center of Excellence. Strong interdisciplinary participation in UD-CCM programs by faculty from various University departments continues to support rapid response to a wide range of research opportunities. Continuing research in the 4 Centers of Excellence and the addition of 11 new research projects during the year (totaling $1.6 Million in value) helped maintain the desired portfolio of high value/quality research programs and personnel to balance corporate and government sponsors’ needs for applied and basic research. UD-CCM’s ability to attract and maintain key personnel and a stable workforce in general ensured that the base of skill and knowledge needed to take advantage of research opportunities was not only maintained, but strengthened. Salaries and tuitions for graduate students, and salaries for faculty, staff, and undergraduates comprise a large portion of UD-CCM expenditures providing significant economic stimulation.

In addition to the Centers of Excellence, major sources of funding enabling continuing growth are, Industry (through SBIRs, STTRs and contracts and agreements solely funded by industry), and the State of Delaware In addition to providing funding for CCM, new STTRs and SBIRs associated with large, multiyear programs confirm the importance of these programs in leveraging ongoing research to provide opportunities for small business involvement.

UD-CCM continued to be a major contributor to College of Engineering and University of Delaware research expenditures. In comparison to the 5 departments and 6 research centers within the College of Engineering, UD-CCM continued to maintain a leadership role in funding. CCM funding is currently 20% of the $41 Million annual budget of the College and 8% of the University of Delaware externally
sponsored research.
