Composite Materials Research (CMR)
Collaborative Program
ARL Materials Center of Excellence
In 1996, the Composite Materials Research (CMR) Collaborative Program was
established at the UD-CCM by the Army Research Laboratory as one of three
ARL Materials Centers of Excellence (MCoE). At the completion of the
initial five-year MCoE in 2000, CMR was considered the most successful
of the three 1996 ARL programs, with the 1999 ARL Visiting Committee citing
CMR as a "model for other government/university collaborative programs."
CMR research is focused on establishing the relationships among processing,
microstructure, and performance of multifunctional hybrid composites.
The overall goal of CMR is to establish the science base to enable a
"Materials by Design" approach for lightweight and affordable
multifunctional materials.
"We consider our program at UD-CCM to be a natural extension of
our in-house work. This program is seen as a model of how to collaborate with
University partners in innovative research for our soldiers due in large part
to the successes along the way (two Siple Memorial Awards).
- Dr. Bruce K. Fink, Chief, Composites and Lightweight Structures Branch, ARL
