Research Interests: Composite materials, simulation and design of composites manufacturing processes, experimental mechanics, fracture mechanics, residual stress and warpage analysis, joining, induction lamination, automated tow placement, fusion bonding, software development for composite manufacturing processes.
Executive Summary
Dr. John Tierney is a Scientist at the Center for Composite Materials in the University of Delaware. Dr Tierney holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University and has an honors Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Ireland. Dr. Tierney has extensive experience in design and processing of composites and has been conducting ongoing research for innovative processing methods for manufacturing composites parts, which include automated tow placement, induction lamination, VARTM processing, autoclave manufacturing, high temperature filament winding and infrared thermoforming. His work has focused on modeling material behavior as well as process optimization for manufacturing composites using numerous analytical and FEA based methods.
Dr. Tierney was lead design engineer on optimal design of lightweight 105mm and 120mm composite overwrapped gun tubes as part of ARL’s Future Combat Systems program with ARL and Picatinny Arsenal. He co-invented the Rapid Induction Lamination Process (RAIL) for facilitating the high speed production of the M829E3 sabot at ATK rocket center. He was also involved with design of high tension thermoplastic overwrapped ceramic cylinders for lightweight gun tubes. He was design lead on a composite replacement parts project for the Orion P3 with ONR-NAVAIR using elevated temperature carbon based fabric composites. He is currently involved with continuous MMC processing using ultrasonic welding, and on the development of a high energy drop tower for armored panel testing.
Dr. Tierney is lead software engineer at UD-CCM and developed a generic set of design tools called CDS (Composite Design and Simulation Software) which represents the core of all analytical software tools for composites processing, mechanics and design at CCM. These applications are currently distributed to ARL, other DoD agencies as well as industry and academic institutions worldwide.
Dr. Tierney is proficient in CATIAv5 as well as a number of FEA commercial packages that include Patran/Nastran, Abaqus, ANSYS as well as FiberSIM, Abaqus for Catia (AFC) and MSC.SimDesigner. He often presents workshops to industry on how to apply these tools for composite design and analysis.
