UD-CCM
on the team for the new FAA Center of Excellence
On 18 December 2003, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the
creation of a new Air Transportation Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials.
The kick-off meeting for the joint centers was held March 3, 2004 at the FAA
Tech Center in Atlantic City. This new Center of Excellence was awarded jointly
to Wichita State University and the University of Washington. CCM is a member
of the Wichita State University team, which also includes Northwestern University,
Oregon State University, Purdue University, Tuskegee University, and the University
of California at Los Angeles. will conduct research, engineering and prototype
development toward the safe and reliable use of advanced materials and composites
in large commercial aircraft.
"One hundred years after the first flight, this nation remains committed
to leading the world in aviation technology research and development,"
said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta. "This new center
will help lead America into its second century of aviation excellence."
Advanced composites have emerged as the structural materials of choice for many
aerospace applications because of their superior specific strength and stiffness
properties. First developed for military applications, composites now play a
significant role in a wide range of current generation military aerospace systems.
The large commercial transport aviation industry has seen a significant increase
in adoption of composite materials during the past 25 years, and many advances
have been made in the general aviation and rotorcraft vehicles where composites
are utilized for primary structural applications. This Center of Excellence
in Advanced Materials will pursue activities and programs on research and development
for the large commercial transport aviation industry, while focusing on localized
research and certification issues related to advanced composites.

Success
for SAMPE Student Chapter Members
Two members of the SAMPE student chapter did an outstanding job representing
UD-CCM at the Baltimore-Washington SAMPE Student Night in February. Curt Cichanowski
placed second in the paper competition with a presentation entitled "Static
and Dynamic Behavior of Scarf-Repaired Thick-Section Composite Plates."
His work has been supported by the Composite Materials Technology program while
he works with Bazle Gama, Shridhar Yarlagadda, and Professor Gillespie. Fuping
Zhou placed first in the poster competition with her poster "Energy Dissipation
Mechanism of Granular Materials during High Pressure." She has been working
with Professor Advani and Eric Wetzel (Army Research Laboratory) under support
by the Composite Materials Research program. Other schools participating in
the Student Night included West Virginia University, University of Maryland
- Baltimore County, and University of Maryland - College Park.
In addition, Jennifer Egolf won one of eight $1000 SAMPE Undergraduate Awards.
She has been a summer intern at CCM for the past two summers, working with Joe
Deitzel, Amit Chatterjee (research staff), and Ahmad Abu Obaid (postdoc) on
the effect of reactive preform binders on composite structural properties. This
work is part of a Small Business Innovative Research program with Solectria
with funding from the Army Research Laboratory.
At the student chapter meeting on March 10, new officers were elected for 2004-2005.
They are
President: Justin Clews
Vice President: Andres Leal
Treasurer: Solange Amouroux
Secretary: Valentin Neacsu
Webmaster: Justin Clews
Congratulations to these CCM graduate students.
