CCM Accomplishments to be Showcased at SAMPE 2005
The
SAMPE 2005 Symposium & Exhibition will provide CCM with an ideal
venue to showcase its recent accomplishments. The event will be held
in Long Beach, CA, from May 15. CCM researchers are presenting more
than 15 papers over a wide range of topics at this year’s conference.
Visitors to CCM's booth will learn about developments in software and
re-engineering capabilities, efforts in elevated-temperature VARTM, and
continuing improvements in manufacturing sensing and control. |

Our high level of interaction with industry is a major factor in our continued
progress in research and technology transfer, says Center Director Jack Gillespie. We
offer our consortium members the opportunity to participate in collaborative
research with us, and we continually apprise them of progress on large sponsored
programs as well as individual projects. The SAMPE Symposium will provide us
with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the many benefits of consortium
membership to potential new members. From fiscal year 2004 to present, 62
companies have benefited from consortium membership.
In addition to research findings, the Center's booth will feature demonstrations
of software for advanced design and analysis of composite structures. Developed
at the Center over the past several years, these powerful tools have recently
been upgraded and packaged as a new Composite Design Software (CDS) suite.
The tools are available to government sponsors and members of the industrial
consortium. Click here to download

With education an important component of CCM's mission, the activities of
the SAMPE chapter at Delaware will also be showcased at the event. Two graduate
student members, Solange Amouroux and Vahik Krikorian, have received SAMPE-sponsored
trips to compete as finalists in the student symposium, to be held on Tuesday,
May 3rd.
Other members of the SAMPE-UD chapter attending the conference include Valentin
Neascu and Xiao Gao. Gao was the first-place winner at last year's Student
Symposium; as winner, she received a society-sponsored trip to Paris to present
her research at the SAMPE Europe 26th International Conference and Forums.
In addition to the exhibit, the findings of CCM's collaborative research programs
will be highlighted in eighteen papers presented at technical sessions. The
following provides the title, authors, and session date, time, and topic for
each paper. Exact presentation times should be checked on the program.

Graduate Student Receives Adhesion Society Award
Xiao Gao, a PhD candidate working at CCM, has been awarded a Peebles Award for
Graduate Student Research in Adhesion Science, which provides partial support
to attend the annual meeting of the Adhesion Society. In addition to this support,
registration fees for the short course and the meeting are waived for the Peebles
Award winners. The selection of awardees is based upon a short paper, submitted
by the student, covering his/her own work to date. The title of Gao's paper
is "A Study of the Mechanical Interlocking Effect on Polymer Composite
Properties." |

Last year Xiao Gao took first place in the Ph.D. portion of the SAMPE Graduate/Senior
Student Award and Symposium Competition in Long Beach, CA. Gao served as the
president of the SAMPE-UD student chapter for 2003-2004. Jack Gillespie is
Xiao Gao's advisor in research on interface mechanics including the microdroplet
and other tests under the Composite Materials Research Program funded by the
Army Research Laboratory.
