Economic Impact on the State of Delaware
    CCM Helps Power Delaware's Economy

    (2009-2010 CCM Annual Report)

With annual research expenditures of $10-11M/year, UD-CCM is a large research enterprise that has a significant economic impact on the state of Delaware and beyond by:
    DEmap
    • Generating jobs for scientists, engineers, and students
    • Attracting visitors to campus
    • Purchasing services from local suppliers
    • Providing technology to industry
    • Partnering with industry to secure research funding and jobs for industry
    • Disseminating information through our website, newsletters, workshops and composites software, providing our industrial partners with a competitive edge
    • Providing no-cost consulting to Delaware companies

Our programs provide a vehicle for technology transfer to all Delaware industries, large and small, and a framework for discussions with companies that have a need for such technology and that may be open to location/relocation in Delaware.

Recent high-impact successes include Newark, Del.-based WhiteOptics receiving a $1.5M grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to work in partnership with CCM researchers in the development of new technology that will improve the efficiency, lifetime, and cost of energy-efficient LED light fixtures.

Another example of a high-impact success is CCM’s role in the base realignment and closure of the Army’s facilities at Ft. Monmouth, N.J. to Aberdeen, MD. The effort resulted in a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between UD and the Army, a partnership that builds on the long history of Army support for UD-CCM, an Army Center of Excellence since 1986.  The CRADA will establish the foundation to create a technology park on the Chrysler site, attract businesses that are relocating in this area, offer opportunities for new spin-off companies, and increase research, education, and technology transfer opportunities at UD with the potential to create hundreds of new jobs for the state and our students.

The following provides some statistics to demonstrate CCM’s impact during 2009:

    • More than 135 Delaware company locations benefited from information created at UD-CCM.
    • 56 companies participated in our industrial consortium, including 41 companies incorporated in Delaware.
    • CCM collaborated with small businesses to submit 23 SBIR/STTR proposals, with a winning percentage approaching 50 percent (see table for examples).
    • CCM hosted more than 500 visitors, including 300 who attended the center’s three-day 35th anniversary symposium.
