CCM Equipment

UD-CCM’s 34,000 sq-ft Composite Science Manufacturing Laboratory (CMSL) houses some $16 million worth of state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities. Faculty, staff, and students have access to a broad spectrum of characterization, manufacturing, processing, and support equipment within the center as well as in other related departments at the University.

A new thermal analysis laboratory was established at CCM during the past year through a major long-term partnership between the Center and Mettler Toledo. The lab includes some $500,000 worth of equipment for thermal mechanical analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and other techniques for materials characterization. With an expert in residence to support use of the state-of-the-art equipment, the new facility will provide unprecedented opportunities for training, education, and collaborative research.

Other new equipment and capability upgrades during the past year include a HAAS VF-9/40 vertical machining center, a Huttinger TIG 5/300 robotic induction welding system, an Amtech Ultraseam 20 robotic consolidation system, a Hitachi TM 100 scanning electron microscope, a Nikon UDM Eclipse LV1000 optical microscope, a lab-scale film extrusion system, and new digital controllers, computers, and software for three Instron mechanical test machines. Also, an additional 8,000 square feet of laboratory space was acquired for the Applications and Technology Transfer Laboratory (ATTL), an 18,000 sq. ft. off-campus laboratory facility located approximately three miles from the CMSL.
